I don't really like to dissect politics.  I will - if there's a discussion, but usually that just ends because I have a negatively toned "what about _____ " for pretty much every topic people get all excited about.  It's a gift.  The gift of sarcasm and pessimism.  (If I don't consider it a gift, then I'm being pessimistic) Talking politics is a lose-lose situation every time and I'm here to make sure you get your money's worth.  

Here are some bi-partisan examples:

Economics: 

George Bush lead us into this economic crisis.  Well, maybe our government did lead us into this crisis, but as I seem to recall, the economy was gang-busters for most of Bush's tenure.  Granted, I am not a fan of GW, but you can't blame him for these problems we are having now.  He cannot control how congress votes, and congress chose to pass on regulating wall street and the mortgage industry.  As they should have.  That's what capitalism is.  Everyone knows economics is cyclical.  It's the first thing they teach you on day one of Econ 101.  It can't just go up forever.   If you want it to be the same forever, move to a communist/socialist regime.  Even China, the last great Communist power is quickly becoming, or some would say - already is, a capitalistic society. 

The Bail-out: 

The whole thing screams socialism to me.  I was against it from the start.  But, apparently Armageddon was going to happen if we didn't do that.  I don't pretend to be Alan Greenspan.  Then I saw Cinderella Man, and got some perspective, albeit Hollywood perspective, on what the Great Depression was like.  I certainly don't want that.  So...bail-out it is. 

And, in my opinion, the executives should still get bonuses.  Most of them are fine law-abiding citizens.  Who is going to run our companies if we don't pay the executives?  Who is going to pay all the taxes if we "spread the wealth"?  We all know the wealthiest pay the most.  As a wife of a good and honest executive, who has worked hard and has highly educated himself to get where he is - I could see us moving overseas to a more lucrative, less regulated economy...as will much of the talent if all the perks of the job are taken away, and becoming jail bait is constantly waived in your face. 

Foreign policy: 

George Bush unjustly sent our country to war.  Yes we're in a war, whether it was justified or not, but we're in one now and have to deal with reality.  We can't just pretend it's not there and stop sending money.  A lot of the world hates us and thinks we're war-mongers.  A lot of the world also benefits from our help. 

Lets remember that no matter who is in office, or what we do on a global scale, a large portion of the world will hate America just on principle. Let's also recall what happened during the Clinton presidency when we took a laissez-faire attitude to world military involvement...Terrorists went unchecked - the first trade center bombing happened, the Cole bombing happened, several US foreign embassy buildings were bombed killing hundreds of innocent people, and then 9-11 happened.  Would you rather be safe and tick some of the world off, or just all get along and get bombed?  Hell, you could probably blame the whole intelligence mess on the Clinton administration too if you so choose.  By the time GW got in office, none of the intelligence agencies were even talking to one another.  Nobody was at the steering wheel of a very big ship.  It happened, now we have to tactically manage it.  We cannot ignore the problem in honor of idealism.

"Drill Baby Drill": 

It's absolutely counterproductive.  Why would we go nuts drilling now when: a) we don't have enough underground to support ourselves, b) the use of most fossil fuel technologies is bad for the environment, and c) sooner rather than later, oil will be gone and will be obsolete?  We need to focus on new technologies.  Not wasting our time and resources sucking the last drops of oil out of the earth.  Let the Middle east live fat on oil now.  In 50 years they will be back in the stone age with no oil left, begging us for aid and help to feed their unemployed, uneducated and impoverished people. 

Taxes: 

According to all the calculators, my family exists in an upper-middle class pocket that gets screwed no matter what.  I don't care about Joe the Plumber.  I don't care about Bill Gates.  All I know is...Less regulation/less government...less taxes.  More programs/bigger government...more taxes.  Have we forgotten that basic principle?  You can extrapolate from there if you know anything about the traditional party lines...Not to mention...why the hell would I pay more to have more regulations thrown at me?  This is America.  Leave me alone to live my life how I want.  Or, I will move to the real America, which is looking more and more like - Canada.

Campaign Reform: 

Until we change how campaigns are funded and how lobbying works, politics is dirty.  And, in my opinion, whatever a candidate says when campaigning, has little to do with what will happen when they are actually in office. 

When a candidate is campaigning, they are explaining to you what their platform is.  But, really, how much of that platform, in it's pure form, ever reaches legislation?  A very diluted amount, let's admit it.  Ultimately, a president gets to either sign or not sign.  Go to war or not.  Meet with foreign dignitaries or not.  Granted, these are huge decisions, but implying that an agenda can be scheduled and accomplished is not reality.  Things happen, like terrorist attacks, or hurricane Katrina, or oil crises.   The legislation that is enacted during a tenure as president has less to do with a president's platform, and more to do with who's sitting in Congress, and who's paying who to vote for which causes.

"Change": 

The smoother the talker, the more we are compensating for something else.  I am ALWAYS suspicious of a persuasive talker.  For example:  I have received an offer from every job that I have interviewed for as a CPA, except one.  However, I hate accounting.  I just tell them what they want to hear, act confident, smile, and I'm in.  Sound familiar?  I love to listen to Obama talk.  He makes me feel all patriotic and warm and fuzzy inside.  But as stated above...is that really going to happen without negative side effects?  Most likely, NO.  I don't think McCain gets his points across very well, and I don't like the negative campaigning, but I like how McCain has a record of overstepping partisan lines to get stuff done.  It will always be a compromise, but at least it gets done.  Do we really think that Obama is going to unite our country and government when he's about as liberal as they come?  Will he suddenly be sympathetic to right wingers once he sits in the nice cushy oval office chair?  Hmmm.

I guess you can figure out who I voted for.  What it comes down to for me every 4 years is: what will be "the lesser of two evils".   I am in the common sense party...and a lot of this doesn't make sense.

I'm sure I"ll get a lot of mad comments...but hey...it's my blog and I can spew propaganda if I want.  Nobody listens to me anyway...nyeh.
